Why a Slow Website Loses Customers in Kenya (and How to Check Yours)

Akinyi runs a hardware shop in Embakasi. Her website listed paint, tools and plumbing supplies, and she paid for Google Ads. The clicks came in, but almost nobody called. One day she opened her own site on her phone in the shop. It took nine seconds to show anything.

Most of the people she was paying Google for had given up long before that.

The short answer

  • Most visitors leave a website that takes more than about 3 seconds to load on a phone.
  • Test yours free at Google PageSpeed Insights: aim for a mobile score of 90 or more.
  • The usual causes are huge images, too many plugins, cheap hosting and page builders.
  • Speed also affects your Google ranking and how much you pay for ads.

Why speed matters more in Kenya

Most Kenyan visitors browse on mid-range phones over mobile data. A site that feels fine on office Wi-Fi can be painfully slow on Safaricom 4G in a matatu. Every second costs customers, and every visitor who leaves is a wasted ad click.

How to check your website speed in two minutes

  • Go to pagespeed.web.dev and enter your website address.
  • Look at the Mobile tab first.
  • Check the score (90–100 is good) and Largest Contentful Paint (under 2.5 seconds is good).
  • Scroll down to see what Google says is slowing the page.

What usually slows Kenyan websites down

Problem Typical fix
Photos straight from the phone (3–5 MB each) Resize and convert to WebP: often 90% smaller
Too many plugins and scripts Remove what you do not use
Heavy page builders and sliders Simpler layouts, or a rebuild
Cheap shared hosting far from Kenya Better hosting and a CDN such as Cloudflare
No caching Turn on page caching

What happened to Akinyi

Hardware store owner serving a customer who shows her an item on his phone

Akinyi’s site had 6 MB of photos on the homepage, a slider nobody used and 31 plugins. After the images were compressed, the slider removed and the site moved to faster hosting with caching, her mobile score went from 31 to 94 and the homepage loaded in under two seconds.

With the same ad budget, calls from the website roughly doubled in the following month, and customers started showing her products on their phones at the counter.

Akinyi is a composite, based on situations we see often. The numbers are typical, not a promise.

Website speed: FAQs

How fast should my website load?

The main content should appear in under 2.5 seconds on a phone. Aim for a PageSpeed mobile score of 90 or more.

Is PageSpeed Insights free?

Yes. It is a free Google tool at pagespeed.web.dev.

Does speed affect Google ranking?

Yes. Speed is part of Google’s page experience signals, and slow sites also lose visitors before they convert.

Will better hosting fix everything?

Not on its own. Heavy images and too many plugins slow a site down even on good hosting.

How much does it cost to speed up a website?

Many sites can be fixed in a few days for roughly KSh 15,000–40,000, depending on how they were built.
