How Much Does It Cost to Host a Website in Kenya? (2026 Prices)

Brian’s phone rang at 6:40 am on 23 December, just as the sun came up over his car hire yard in Nakuru.

It was a customer from Nairobi who had been trying to book a seven-seater for a family Christmas in Naivasha. “I’m on your website and it says ‘Account Suspended’. Are you still in business?”

Brian opened the site on his phone. A plain white page. Two words. He tried to email the customer a quote from his bookings address, and the email bounced straight back. The email lived on the same hosting as the website, so it had gone down too.

It took a morning of phone calls to understand what had happened. Three years earlier, a freelance designer had built the website and set up the hosting on his own account. “Don’t worry, I’ll handle everything,” he had said. The renewal reminders went to the designer’s inbox. The designer had since moved on and changed his number. The invoice sat unpaid for a month, and the hosting company did exactly what its terms said it would: it switched the account off, in the busiest week of Brian’s year.

Getting it back took two days and a lot of proving that the business was his. In that time, at least six bookings went to the yard down the road.

When it was over, Brian asked the question that brings many Kenyan business owners to this page: “What should hosting actually cost, and how do I make sure this never happens again?”

The short answer

  • Shared hosting, which suits most small business websites, costs about KSh 2,000–10,000 a year in Kenya. Starter plans go as low as about KSh 900.
  • A .co.ke domain costs about KSh 1,200–2,500 a year to renew.
  • The SSL certificate (the padlock) is usually free, and basic email often comes with the hosting.
  • Busier sites on a VPS pay about KSh 700–5,000+ a month, and a dedicated server starts at about KSh 6,000 a month.

Together, hosting and a domain come to about KSh 3,000–12,500 a year for most small businesses. Always check the renewal price: the first-year offer is often less than half of it.

What you are actually paying for

Brian had never thought about hosting. Most business owners don’t, until it stops. The easiest way to picture it is a shop:

  • Your domain (such as yourbusiness.co.ke) is the address on the signboard.
  • Your hosting is the premises: the computer, called a server, where your website’s files live and which sends your pages to every visitor.
  • The SSL certificate is the lock on the door. It puts the padlock and “https” in the browser, and Google and customers both expect it.
  • Business email is the post box with your name on it, like bookings@yourbusiness.co.ke.

Like premises, you rent hosting. You pay monthly or, more often, a year at a time, and if you stop paying, the doors close. That is what happened to Brian.

Web hosting prices in Kenya in 2026

There are three main kinds of hosting, and the right one depends on how busy your website is, not how important your business is.

Web hosting types in Kenya in 2026 compared: shared hosting at about KSh 900 to 10,000 a year for business websites and blogs, VPS hosting at about KSh 700 to 5,000 or more a month for busy shops, and a dedicated server from about KSh 6,000 a month for large platforms
Shared, VPS or dedicated: most small business websites start, and stay, on shared hosting.
Type of hosting Typical price in Kenya (2026) Good for
Shared hosting KSh 900–10,000 a year (most plans KSh 2,000–10,000) Business websites, blogs, portfolios and small online shops
VPS KSh 700–5,000+ a month (managed from about KSh 2,500) Busy online shops, several websites, booking and custom systems
Cloud hosting Pay for what you use Sites with big peaks, such as ticket sales
Dedicated server From about KSh 6,000 a month Large platforms with heavy traffic and big databases

A VPS (virtual private server) is your own slice of a server. With a managed VPS, the host looks after the server for you. These ranges come from the published plans of Kenyan hosting companies in 2026. Prices change often, so check the host’s own page before you buy.

Brian’s website had twelve pages, a fleet gallery and a booking form. A good shared plan was all he ever needed. His problem was never the type of hosting. It was who controlled it, and what it cost after year one.

The other things on your yearly bill

Hosting is only one line. Here is everything a typical business website pays for each year.

Item What to expect
.co.ke domain First year from a few hundred shillings on offers, up to about KSh 2,300. Renewal usually KSh 1,200–2,500 a year.
SSL certificate Free with most good hosts. You rarely need to pay for one.
Business email Often included with cPanel hosting. Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 charge per person, every month.
Backups Included on good plans. Check whether restoring a backup is free.
Care and maintenance Optional, but someone has to install updates, check backups and watch for problems.

KeNIC, which manages .ke domains, raised its prices in February 2025, so .co.ke renewals cost more today than they did a few years ago. If you have not checked your domain renewal price recently, it is worth a look.

The renewal surprise: why year one is the cheap year

When Brian finally saw the unpaid invoice, the number surprised him more than the suspension. The hosting he thought cost “about KSh 100 a month” was asking for KSh 4,800, and the domain wanted another KSh 1,700.

His designer had bought one of the “from KSh 99 a month” deals you see advertised everywhere. Those prices are real, but they usually apply to the first year only, often need you to pay one to three years upfront, and tend to come with a free domain that is only free once.

Bar chart of a typical promotional hosting deal in Kenya: year one costs KSh 1,188 for hosting with a free domain, while year two costs KSh 6,500, made up of KSh 4,800 hosting and KSh 1,700 for the .co.ke domain, about 5.5 times more
An illustrative example. The promo price and the free domain apply to the first year only.

None of this is a scam. It is how hosting is sold all over the world. But it means the honest way to compare hosts is the renewal price, not the banner price. Ask for it in writing. If you like a host and its promo is good, paying two or three years upfront can lock it in.

Kenyan or international hosting?

Brian’s cousin in Nairobi swore by a big international host. His mechanic’s nephew swore by a Kenyan one. Both can work. Here is how they differ.

  • Kenyan hosts bill in shillings, take M-Pesa, answer support in your time zone and can sell you a .co.ke domain in the same account. Many rent their servers in Europe or the US, so ask where yours will be.
  • International hosts bill in dollars by card, so the exchange rate changes what you pay at renewal. Support is usually good, but it is often chat-only and across time zones.

For speed, where the server sits matters less than you might think. A fast server with modern storage (SSD or NVMe) and a CDN, which keeps copies of your pages close to your visitors, usually makes a bigger difference.

Where the server sits does matter for data. Brian’s booking form collects ID and driving licence numbers. Under Kenya’s Data Protection Act, he has to keep that information safe, and storing personal data outside Kenya comes with extra conditions, as the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner explains. If your website collects personal details, ask your host where the servers are and how backups are protected.

Why cheap, slow hosting costs more than it saves

Before December, Brian’s website took about eight seconds to open on a phone on mobile data. He thought that was normal. It isn’t.

Google’s research found that more than half of mobile visitors leave a page that takes longer than three seconds to load. For a car hire business, every one of those visitors was a booking that could go to a competitor with a faster site. Speed is also part of how Google decides which pages to show first, so a slow site is harder to find in the first place.

The cheapest plans often squeeze hundreds of websites onto one server. When a neighbour gets busy, your site slows down. When a neighbour sends spam, the whole server can end up on blocklists, and your emails start landing in customers’ spam folders. Brian had blamed his customers’ email for that for two years.

What happens when your hosting or domain expires

This is the part nobody explains when you buy, and it is what caught Brian out.

When hosting expires

Your website goes down and visitors see a “suspended” page. Any email on the same hosting stops working. Most hosts keep your files for a short grace period, often a couple of weeks to a month, then delete them for good. Some charge a fee to restore the account.

When a domain expires

Your website and email stop working, even if the hosting is paid. There is usually a grace period when you can still renew at the normal price, then a period when getting the domain back costs extra. After that, the domain is released, and anyone can register it, including a competitor.

The fix is simple, and it costs nothing:

  • Put the hosting and domain accounts in your business’s name, with an email address you read.
  • Turn on auto-renew, and keep the payment card or M-Pesa details up to date.
  • Put both renewal dates in your calendar, with a reminder a month before.
  • Keep the logins somewhere safe that someone else in the business can reach.

Your web designer can still manage everything for you. They just should not be the only person who can get in.

8 questions to ask before you pay for hosting

Brian wrote these on a sheet of paper before he spoke to a single hosting company. You can use the same list.

Eight questions to ask any hosting company in Kenya before you pay: the renewal price, whether the account is in your name, daily backups and free restores, a free SSL certificate, email accounts and storage, server location and speed, support hours and M-Pesa payment, and how easy it is to upgrade or leave
Ask for the answers in writing, especially the renewal price.

Brian’s fix

In January, Brian moved. He opened a hosting account in his company’s name, with his own email address, and moved his .co.ke domain into an account he controls. He paid for two years upfront, turned on auto-renew and put both renewal dates in his phone.

He also stopped being the person who has to notice when something breaks. A care plan now looks after the updates and backups, and somebody gets an alert if the site goes down.

Bookings that arrive on their own, because the website is simply always there.

His website now opens in under two seconds. His emails reach inboxes. And over Easter, the first booking of the holiday came in through the website at 11 pm on a Sunday while Brian was asleep.

These days, when his phone rings early, it is usually somebody asking whether the seven-seater is free.

Brian is a composite of the business owners we work with. The prices, ranges and advice in this guide are real.

Web hosting in Kenya: FAQs

How much is web hosting per month in Kenya?

Shared hosting works out at about KSh 80–850 a month, though most hosts bill it yearly. A VPS costs about KSh 700–5,000+ a month, and a dedicated server from about KSh 6,000 a month.

What is the cheapest web hosting in Kenya?

Starter shared plans begin at under KSh 1,000 for the first year. Before you buy, check the renewal price, the storage and email limits, and whether backups and SSL are included.

Is free hosting good enough for a business website?

No. Free hosting usually means ads on your site, a web address that is not your own, tight limits and no support. It can also disappear without warning. For a business, a paid plan from a few thousand shillings a year is worth it.

Does hosting include a domain and email?

Many yearly plans include a free domain for the first year, then you pay the normal renewal price. Most cPanel hosting includes email accounts on your own domain. Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 are separate and charged per user.

What happens if I don’t renew my hosting?

Your website and any email on the same hosting stop working. After a grace period, the host may delete your files, so always keep your own backup and keep the renewal email address up to date.

How much does a .co.ke domain cost?

Registration ranges from a few hundred shillings on offers to about KSh 2,300 for the first year. Renewals usually cost KSh 1,200–2,500 a year, depending on the registrar.

Should I choose Kenyan or international hosting?

Choose on speed, support, renewal price and who you can reach when something breaks. Kenyan hosts take M-Pesa and bill in shillings. International hosts bill in dollars. Either can be fast with good servers and a CDN.

Can I move my website to another host?

Yes. Take a full backup of your files and database, set the site up on the new host, test it, then point your domain to it. Keep the old hosting until the new one works. Moving a .co.ke domain between registrars usually costs about KSh 1,000.

How do I know if my hosting is too slow?

Test your website with Google’s free PageSpeed Insights on a phone. If pages take more than about three seconds to load, or the report flags a slow server response, your hosting is a likely cause.
