Google Ads Pricing in Kenya: What You Will Really Spend (2026)

Kamau was on a roof in Ruiru, bolting down the last rail of a 3 kW solar system, when his phone rang for the fourth time that morning.

“Hello, I saw your advert on Google. Are you hiring? I have a certificate in electrical installation.”

It was the eleventh call like it that week. The others had asked for free solar panels from “the government programme”, for a price list in PDF, and for a course. One caller wanted to know if Kamau could teach him to install panels himself.

That evening he opened Google Ads. In nine days he had spent KSh 31,200. 412 people had clicked his ad. Three had asked for a quote. One had become a job.

Kamau runs a small solar installation business in Thika. He had set up the ads himself one Sunday night: a few keywords like “solar” and “solar panels”, the whole of Kenya as his area, and KSh 3,500 a day, because that is what Google suggested. He had expected to pay KSh 3,500 a day. Some days it was nearly double.

Sitting at his kitchen table, he typed the question that brings many Kenyan business owners to this page: “What should Google Ads actually cost, and where did my money go?”

The short answer

  • Google Ads has no fixed price. For search ads, you pay each time someone clicks, at a price set by an auction.
  • In Kenya in 2026, a click costs roughly KSh 15–150, often KSh 40–100 for trades and home services. Busy Nairobi keywords can pass KSh 200.
  • Many small businesses start with KSh 500–1,500 a day, about KSh 15,000–45,000 a month.
  • Google adds 16% VAT for Kenyan billing addresses, and you pay by credit or debit card. There is no M-Pesa option for Google Ads yet.
  • Google can spend up to 2× your daily budget on a busy day, but never more than 30.4× it in a month.

How Google Ads pricing works

When someone in Thika types “solar installation near me”, Google runs a quick auction among every business that wants to appear for that search. You do not simply pay the most to win. Google looks at your bid, how relevant and useful your ad is, and how good the page it sends people to is. A well-made ad with a clear, fast page can appear above a competitor who bids more, and pay less per click.

For search ads, you pay only when someone clicks. Seeing your ad is free. That is the good news. The bad news is that you pay for every click, including the ones from people who were never going to buy, which is exactly what happened to Kamau.

What a click costs on Google in Kenya

Roughly what Google Ads cost per click in Kenya in 2026 by industry: local shops and retail KSh 15 to 40, online shops KSh 20 to 65, education and training KSh 25 to 70, health and clinics KSh 40 to 90, trades and home services KSh 40 to 100, real estate KSh 45 to 120, and legal, finance and professional services KSh 60 to 150 or more
Roughly what Kenyan agencies report. The more businesses compete for a search, the more each click costs.

What you pay depends mostly on competition. A lawyer, an insurer or a real-estate agent can earn a lot from one customer, so they bid high, and clicks in those industries cost more. A shop selling everyday goods competes with many sellers on low margins, so its clicks are cheaper. Nairobi searches tend to cost more than the same searches upcountry, because more businesses are bidding for them.

Kamau’s clicks cost him about KSh 76 each: KSh 31,200 for 412 clicks. Right in the range for trades and home services. The price was not the problem. What he was buying was.

How much should you budget for Google Ads?

You set an average daily budget for each campaign. According to Google, it can spend up to twice that on busy days and less on quiet ones, but you will never pay more than 2× your daily budget on any one day, or more than 30.4× it in a month. So KSh 1,000 a day means at most KSh 30,400 a month. That explains Kamau’s “nearly double” days.

The best way to set a budget is to work backwards from what a customer is worth to you.

Google Ads budget maths for a Kenyan service business: a daily budget of KSh 1,000 means at most KSh 30,400 a month, about 500 clicks at KSh 60 each, about 30 enquiries if 6 in 100 visitors get in touch, and about 10 new jobs if one in three enquiries is won. That is about KSh 1,013 per enquiry and KSh 3,040 per job, plus 16% VAT
Swap in your own numbers. If a new customer is worth more than they cost to win, the ads are paying for themselves.

For Kamau, a typical home system is a job worth well over KSh 100,000. Paying KSh 3,000 in ads to win one is a good deal. Paying KSh 31,200 for one job is not.

As a starting point, many small Kenyan businesses spend KSh 500–1,500 a day for the first month, then adjust once they can see which searches bring real customers.

Where Kamau’s money went

The next morning, Kamau opened the Search terms report in Google Ads. It shows the exact searches that triggered your ads. His read like a list of everything except customers:

  • “solar jobs in nairobi”
  • “free solar panels government kenya”
  • “solar panel price list pdf”
  • “solar installation course thika”
  • “how to install solar panels yourself”

Two settings had done this: his keywords were on broad match, and he had no negative keywords.

Google Ads keyword match types explained with the example solar installation: broad match also shows for related searches such as solar jobs, phrase match for searches that include the meaning, and exact match for the same meaning only. Common negative keywords in Kenya include jobs, vacancies, internship, salary, course, training, free, pdf, DIY, how to, second hand, wholesale, Uganda and Tanzania
Match types decide how widely your ad shows. Negative keywords block the searches you never want to pay for.

Match types

Broad match lets Google show your ad for searches it thinks are related, which can include job hunters and students. Phrase match shows it for searches that include the meaning of your keyword, and exact match for searches with the same meaning. For most small businesses, phrase and exact match give much better control.

Negative keywords

A negative keyword stops your ad appearing when a search contains that word. In Kenya, “jobs”, “vacancies”, “salary”, “course”, “free” and “pdf” are almost always worth adding for a business selling a service. Check the Search terms report every week and keep adding.

Location and schedule

Kamau had chosen “Kenya”, so he paid for clicks from Kisumu and Mombasa for jobs he would never drive to. Set a radius around the area you actually serve. In the location options, choosing to reach people who are in your area, rather than people who have only shown interest in it, also cuts out a lot of wasted clicks. And if nobody can answer the phone at night, schedule your ads for the hours you can.

How to pay for Google Ads in Kenya

For accounts in Kenya, Google lists credit and debit cards as the payment method, with a backup card if you want one. You can choose how you pay:

  • Postpay: Google charges your card after your ads run, on the first of the month or when you reach your billing threshold, whichever comes first. Google no longer accepts prepaid cards for postpay.
  • Prepay: you pay first, and your ads stop when the money runs out. Useful if you want a hard limit, or if your card is a prepaid or virtual one.

There is no M-Pesa option for Google Ads yet. President Ruto said in 2025 that he would ask Google to allow it, but as of October 2026 it has not arrived.

The 16% VAT and your KRA PIN

Since 1 February 2023, Google charges 16% VAT to advertisers with a billing address in Kenya. Add your KRA PIN in your Google Ads billing settings, so your tax invoices are valid and, if you are VAT-registered, you can claim the VAT back. Budget for it: KSh 30,000 of ads costs about KSh 34,800.

They do different jobs. Google Ads reaches people who are already searching for what you sell, like the homeowner typing “solar installation Thika”. Facebook and Instagram ads reach people while they scroll, before they are looking, which suits products people buy on impulse or need to see first.

For a service people search for when they need it, such as plumbing, solar, a lawyer or a clinic, Google Ads usually brings the warmest enquiries. Many businesses use both. Our guide to what Facebook ads cost in Kenya covers the other side.

Free Google Ads for Kenyan non-profits

If you run a registered charity or NGO, look at Google Ad Grants. Kenya is one of the countries where Google for Nonprofits is available, and eligible organisations can get up to US$10,000 a month of Google search advertising for free, subject to Google’s rules.

Mistakes that waste Google Ads money

  • Broad keywords with no negatives, which is how Kamau paid for job seekers.
  • Targeting all of Kenya when you serve one town.
  • Sending clicks to your home page instead of a page about the exact service, with prices, photos and a clear way to call or WhatsApp.
  • Not tracking calls and forms, so you cannot tell which keywords bring customers.
  • Never reading the Search terms report.
  • Forgetting the VAT and the 2× daily spending rule when you plan.

Kamau’s second month

Kamau paused everything and started again. He switched to phrase and exact match for searches like “solar installation Thika” and “solar installers near me”, added forty negative keywords, set a 25 km radius around Thika, Ruiru and Juja, and ran the ads from 7 am to 7 pm, when he could pick up. His ad now went to a page with photos of his installations, starting prices and a WhatsApp button. Budget: KSh 1,000 a day.

Fewer clicks, better ones: homeowners who were searching for exactly what he does.

That month he spent KSh 29,800. He got fewer clicks, 488, but they were from the right people: 31 enquiries and 10 installations. Each new job cost him about KSh 3,000 in ads.

The calls from job seekers stopped. The one he still gets now and then, he answers kindly. Then he adds another negative keyword.

Kamau is a composite of the business owners we work with. Google’s rules on budgets, billing and VAT in this guide come from Google’s own help pages; the cost-per-click ranges are typical, not guaranteed.

How much does Google Ads cost per month in Kenya?

You decide. Many small businesses start with KSh 500–1,500 a day, about KSh 15,000–45,000 a month, plus 16% VAT, then adjust once they see which searches bring customers.

Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads?

There is no fixed minimum for most campaigns. But a very small budget gets few clicks, which makes it hard to learn what works. Work out a budget from your cost per click and what a customer is worth.

Can I pay for Google Ads with M-Pesa?

Not directly, as of October 2026. Google lists credit and debit cards for Kenya. Prepaid or virtual cards only work on the prepay setting, because Google no longer accepts prepaid cards for postpay.

Do I pay VAT on Google Ads in Kenya?

Yes. Since 1 February 2023, Google charges 16% VAT to advertisers with a Kenyan billing address. Add your KRA PIN in your billing settings so your tax invoices are valid.

Why did Google spend more than my daily budget?

Google can spend up to twice your average daily budget on busy days, and less on quiet ones. Over a month, you will never pay more than 30.4 times your daily budget.

Do I pay when people see my ad?

For search ads with cost-per-click bidding, no. You pay only when someone clicks. Some other campaign types, such as certain display and video campaigns, can charge for views instead.

How long does it take for Google Ads to work?

Ads can start getting clicks the same day they are approved. Give a new campaign two to four weeks of checking search terms and adding negatives before you judge the results.

Is Google Ads free for NGOs in Kenya?

Eligible non-profits can apply for Google Ad Grants through Google for Nonprofits, which is available in Kenya, for up to US$10,000 a month of free search ads.

Should I use Google Ads or SEO?

Ideally both. Google Ads brings visitors from the first day, but stops when you stop paying. SEO takes months to build, then keeps bringing visitors without paying per click.
