WordPress or a Custom-Built Website in Kenya? How to Choose

Two quotes for the same tour company: KSh 480,000 custom-coded or KSh 95,000 on WordPress. When a custom-built website is worth it in Kenya, and when WordPress is the smarter choice.

WordPress or a Custom-Built Website in Kenya? How to Choose

Zainab held a quote in each hand and laughed out loud.

She has run dhow trips, snorkelling tours and airport transfers in Malindi for nine years. Her first website was built by her nephew in hand-written code. It looked fine, but every time she added a new trip or changed a price, she had to wait for him to have a free weekend. When he moved to Nairobi for work, the website simply stopped changing. Last season’s prices were still on it in March.

So she asked for quotes. The first developer said she needed a “fully bespoke, custom-coded platform”: KSh 480,000, four months, and a monthly support fee. The second agency said it would build the site on WordPress: KSh 95,000, about three weeks, and she could add trips and change prices herself.

The two quotes were for the same business, the same trips and the same customers. One was five times the other. What Zainab wanted to know was simple: “Do I need a custom-built website, or is WordPress enough?”

The short answer

  • Most Kenyan small businesses do not need a custom-coded website. WordPress handles brochure sites, bookings, blogs and online shops with M-Pesa.
  • “Custom design” and “custom code” are different things. A WordPress site can have a fully custom design made for your brand.
  • Choose custom code when your website is the product itself: a marketplace, a booking engine with complex rules, a portal for your clients, or a system that connects deeply to your own software.
  • Ask who can update it. If only one developer can change your website, you depend on them for every price change.
  • Expect roughly KSh 60,000–200,000 for a quality WordPress business site, and often KSh 300,000 and well above for a fully custom-coded build.

What “WordPress” and “custom-built” actually mean

WordPress is free, open-source software for building and managing websites. It runs more than 40% of all websites, according to W3Techs, from small businesses to large news sites. You get an editing screen where you can change text, photos, prices and pages yourself, and thousands of tested add-ons (plugins) for things like booking forms, M-Pesa payments and SEO.

A custom-built (or “bespoke”) website is written from scratch by a developer, usually in a programming framework such as Laravel, Django or Next.js. Everything is made for you, which gives full control, but also means everything from the editing screen to security updates has to be built and maintained by someone who knows that code.

The confusion usually comes from one word: custom. Many agencies, including us, design every site from scratch around your brand and customers, then build it on WordPress. That is a custom design on a proven platform. It is not the same as writing the whole system from nothing.

WordPress or custom code: side by side

  • Cost to build: WordPress roughly KSh 60,000–200,000 for a business site; custom code often KSh 300,000 and well above.
  • Time to launch: WordPress usually two to six weeks; custom code often three months or more.
  • Updating content yourself: WordPress, built in from day one; custom code, only if the developer builds an editing screen.
  • Who can maintain it: WordPress, any of thousands of developers in Kenya; custom code, usually the original developer or someone who learns their code.
  • M-Pesa, bookings, shop: WordPress, tested plugins and integrations; custom code, built for you, which takes longer and costs more.
  • SEO: both can rank well when built properly. Speed, structure and content matter more than the platform.
  • Unusual features: custom code wins when nothing off the shelf does what you need.

When WordPress is the right choice

  • You want a professional website that brings enquiries: services, prices, photos, reviews, a contact form and a WhatsApp button.
  • You want to update it yourself, or have your team do it, without calling a developer.
  • You sell online with a normal shop: products, a cart, M-Pesa and card payments. See what an e-commerce website costs in Kenya.
  • You publish regularly: news, blog posts, trips, listings or events.
  • Your budget and timeline are normal for a small or medium business.

That covers schools, clinics, hotels, tour companies, NGOs, law firms, salons, shops and most of the businesses we meet.

When a custom-built website makes sense

  • The website is your product: a marketplace, a SaaS app, a learning platform with its own rules.
  • Complex logic that no plugin handles well, such as pricing that depends on many changing factors, or a booking engine shared with partners.
  • Deep connection to your own systems, like an ERP, a fleet tracker or a bank API, beyond what standard integrations offer.
  • Very high traffic or strict security rules where you want full control of every line of code.
  • You have a technical team, or a long-term budget, to look after the code for years.

If none of these describe your business, a custom-coded site will mostly cost more, take longer and leave you depending on one developer.

Questions to ask before you choose

  1. What platform will you build on, and why? A good developer explains the choice in terms of your business, not their preference.
  2. Can I update prices, photos and pages myself? Ask to see the editing screen before you sign.
  3. If you are not available, who else could maintain this site? With WordPress, almost any web developer in Kenya can. With custom code, ask for the code to be documented and kept in an account you own, so another developer can take over.
  4. Who owns the domain, hosting and code? They should be in your name.
  5. What does it cost to run each year: hosting, domain, updates, support? See what website maintenance costs in Kenya.
  6. How will you keep it fast and secure? WordPress sites need updates and backups; custom sites need them too.

Zainab’s website, one season later

Tour operator in Malindi welcoming guests to a dhow trip on the beach

Zainab asked the developer behind the KSh 480,000 quote what her site would do that a WordPress site could not. He talked about speed and flexibility, but could not name a feature she actually needed. Her trips, prices, photos, a booking enquiry form, WhatsApp and reviews were all standard.

She chose the WordPress build. It had a custom design around her photos of the reef and the dhows, a page for every trip, a booking form that tells her which trip and date a guest wants, and pages in English and Italian for her many Italian visitors. It went live in under a month.

This season, she changed every price herself in one afternoon, added a new sunset dhow trip in ten minutes, and stopped waiting for anyone’s free weekend. Roughly a third of her bookings now come through the website’s enquiry form and WhatsApp button, instead of through agents who take a commission.

Zainab is a composite, based on situations we see often. The numbers are typical, not a promise.

WordPress or custom website: FAQs

Is WordPress good for business websites in Kenya?

Yes. It runs a large share of the world’s websites, it is easy for your team to update, and it supports bookings, online shops and M-Pesa payments through tested integrations. Built and maintained properly, it is fast, secure and good for SEO.

Is a custom-built website better for SEO?

Not by itself. Google ranks pages on content, relevance, speed and how well they work on phones, not on the platform. A well-built WordPress site and a well-built custom site can both rank well.

Is WordPress secure?

WordPress is as secure as the way it is looked after. Keep the core, theme and plugins updated, use few, well-known plugins, strong passwords and regular backups. Most problems come from sites nobody maintains, on any platform.

How much does a custom-coded website cost in Kenya?

It varies widely, but fully custom builds often start around KSh 300,000 and can reach well over a million shillings for platforms with accounts, payments and complex rules, plus ongoing developer costs.

Can I move from a custom website to WordPress later?

Yes. Your content, pages and images can be moved, and the old addresses redirected so you keep your Google rankings. It is a normal part of a redesign.

What does “custom design” on WordPress mean?

The look, layout and content are designed for your business from scratch, rather than taken from a ready-made template, while WordPress runs the site underneath so you can edit it easily.
